Search Facebook With New Facebook Graph Search
At the present moment in
time Facebook’s Graph search is still pretty limited, and its full use has not
as of yet been fully specked out. However, let’s take a look at how the
Facebook Graph search will search things on facebook and how it will threaten
Google.
The Traditional Facebook Search
In the traditional Facebook search you could enter a phrase into the search bar to search Facebook. This could be anything, but for this example let’s say the phrase we are searching for is ‘chocolate’.
By entering
‘chocolate’ into the traditional Facebook search you would be offered a rather
limited number of results. These would include:
- Facebook Pages that include the word ‘chocolate
- People that include the word ‘chocolate
- Places that include the word ‘chocolate’
Sure, these results are
helpful if you are looking for pages (such as I <3 chocolate), people (such
as Charlotte ‘Chocolate’ Smith) or places (Such as Chocolate Land) that include
the word ‘chocolate’.
But what if you were organizing chocolate party and you wanted to know which of your friends liked chocolate, or perhaps you wanted some images of chocolate.

Nothing in the
traditional Facebook search would be able to help you with these kinds of
questions. Google may be able to help you with images, but it still would not
help you find out more information about your friends. You’d have to post up a
status update asking who liked chocolate and asking which of your friends
wanted to attend. Not exactly the best way to invite your friends to your
awesome chocolate event!
The New Facebook Graph Search
However, with the new Facebook Graph search you could search facebook for Chocolate and find out the following:
- The Facebook Page for chocolate
- People who like chocolate
- Your friends who like chocolate
- Photos of chocolate
- Photos of chocolate before given date.
All of this
information has been accumulated by Facebook and will be provided when facebook
users search facebook, it was just never made as accessible as it is being made
now.
Clearly this is a more
intuitive form of internet searching, one that could certainly have the gods at
Google thinking about what they will need to do to improve their search
algorithms and experience.
The new Facebook Graph
search provides people with the ability to easily sift through a lot more
content than they could before. Not only will this make it easier of the user
to access information it will also help local businesses in particular to be
seen by a whole new audience that they would otherwise miss.
The Facebook Graph
search is no minor undertaking, in fact it is one of Facebook’s biggest targets
since its development. The Facebook Graph search will, in the event of not
being able to find any relevant information on the requested search term,
revert to its traditional way of offering search results, and that’s through
Microsoft Bing’s search tool.
Facebook Graph Search Vs Google Search
It’s unclear yet if and how the Facebook Graph search will compare to Google, and if it will threaten Google’s dominance as a search engine.

Google programmers pondering about what they could do to make their product
better than ever.

Today, I went to the beachfront with my children.
